Letters to My Son: 8 November 2020

Dear K.,

I hope you fall in love one day. Not the type of love that you read about in books or see on television though. I think that type of love isn’t always real, isn’t always attainable. I don’t think that type of love is for everyone. No, I hope you fall in love in a different way, with the written words of a stranger, with the melodies of a musician, with the drawn lines and curves and vivid or dull colors of an artist. I hope you fall in love with the beauty of the world.

And there is beauty in the world, if you know how to find it. I hope you never stop trying to find it.

Right now the world seems so ugly, so dark, so divided, but its not all like this all of the time. There’s beauty to be found. There’s beauty in the dewdrops on blades of grass and the leaves of trees and bushes in the early morning. It’s there in emotion of the voice of a poet or writer reading an original piece that they scribbled in a moment in which they felt most alive and read in front of a crowd of people or in front of a camera, shared with the world, there’s beauty in expression of raw emotions and unabashed spoken thoughts. Its all beautiful, even when it’s sometimes ugly, because it’s someone’s truth.

I hope you fall in love with the changing colors of leaves in the fall, of the individual and unique patterns of a winter snowflake, of of the oranges and yellows and reds and blues of the flames in a bonfire at a friendly gathering. Did you know there are sometimes blues in a fire? They’re there if you look hard enough, if you take the time to see them.

There’s beauty in those blues.

I hope you fall in love with strangers, with their stories, with their pasts, with their individuality, even if it doesn’t match your own. I hope you fall in love with learning about things you don’t understand. With telling your story, even when others don’t want to hear it, with sharing the things you love, you know, you want to learn. I hope you share a part of you or many parts of you, even if it’s scary, even if it doesn’t seem worth it, even if to you its ugly, even when sharing is hard.

There’s beauty in vulnerability.

I hope you fall in love and fall love again and again and again. I hope you never stop falling in love and I hope you remember

That love is what makes positive change. It’s what makes the world turn, its what helps us to make it through. I hope you remember that love is what makes it all worthwhile.
